Ear, nose and throat specialist, head and neck surgeon, associate professor
"I decided to join Helsinki Hospital at the request of my friend Patrik Lassus. I was drawn to the hospital's unique operations model and the chance to work with a community of trusted colleagues."
Bäck's journey to become a medical professional was a series of chance events. Like often in life, luck had its hand in the outcome.
"I was interested in working with people, and since school didn't give me too much trouble I thought medical school might be the place for me. So I decided to apply together with my friend and got accepted."
Experiences gained during his time as a medical student eventually led Bäck to specialise in ENT; as an intern he ended up in the ENT department where he felt right at home.
"I like working in ENT because it's such a diverse specialty. When I started, the most challenging area in ENT to me was head and neck surgery, which I managed to experience before I even graduated. This field has offered me plenty of challenges. My job requires commitment, and it is often quite demanding too. On the other hand, this is exactly why I still find my job so engaging."
The demanding job still rewards Bäck year after year, and staying motivated is easy thanks to continuous training and personal development.
"Although it might sound like a cliche, as a surgeon you're motivated because you see the results of your work immediately. At the same time, I need to make sure I develop my skills for the benefit of my patients."
