Surgical Gastroenterology Specialist Jorma Halttunen is a top expert in his field and a long-serving employee of the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa. For him, Helsinki Hospital provides an opportunity to continue along his life-long career path.
“I joined the team because I want to ease myself into retirement while still being involved in endoscopic operations, in which I have several decades of experience. Having said that, I have also continued to work at Meilahti for the time being. I feel that Helsinki Hospital has the capacity to provide a good working environment, even for complex operations.”
“If necessary, I can also assist in the outpatient clinic by seeing patients who suffer from chronic pancreatitis. Pancreatitis patients need both outpatient and surgical care.”
Like many doctors, Halttunen first began to dream about a career in medicine when still at school. One of his sources of inspiration was literature.
“Certain novels, such as AJ Cronin’s ‘The Green Years’, made a big impression on me. Luckily, the National Board of Health sent me to study medicine in Switzerland. More than 300 Finns graduated from Swiss medical schools in the space of around 10 years.”
Halttunen’s first encounters with surgery came through a summer job during his student years. He knew almost instantly that it was the field for him. Later, after finding permanent employment and gaining experience, he discovered that his strongest suit was endoscopy.
“Surgery – like all branches of medicine – is evolving all the time and needs people who push for further development. It is the patients who ultimately benefit from the introduction of less-invasive treatment techniques and increasingly localized surgical procedures.”
