M.D., Plastic surgeon, orthopedic surgeon
Vesa Juutilainen, orthopaedist and plastic surgeon, is responsible for Helsinki Hospital's ulcer clinic and lower limb plastic surgery but he also performs general corrective plastic surgery, particularly on the torso.
‘Plastic surgery has traditionally been aesthetic surgery in the private sector, and there has been a lack of surgical treatment of problem ulcers and other corrective surgery. In the public sector, on the other hand, treatment of problem ulcers has been poorly organised and the quality has been inconsistent. We want to establish a multidisciplinary clinic at Helsinki Hospital that concentrates on ulcer treatment,’ says Juutilainen.
His surgical background is highly versatile. First he studied orthopaedics and later specialised in plastic surgery. He finds creativity appealing in plastic surgery but it is also obligatory.
‘On many fields of surgery, the work is done using the same template but correction of tissue defects with plastic surgery often calls for imagination. You have to apply your experience and evaluate tissue characteristics. It is very inspiring work.’
