M.D., Ph.D., Neurosurgeon
Jussi Antinheimo is a neurosurgeon who specializes in spinal surgery. In particular, he specializes in demanding spinal surgery, such as minimally invasive lumbar spinal fusion. He says that Helsinki Hospital’s doctor-led, lean way of operating makes it first and foremost a place where patients can receive treatment as flexibly and efficiently as possible.
“The team includes really great professionals, which is very inspiring. I’ve been working with Esa-Pekka Pälvimäki, Juha Pohjola, and Jari Siironen in the field of spinal surgery for a long time. I immensely enjoy being a member of such an efficient and smoothly functioning team,” Antinheimo says.
He became interested in medicine while he was in high school. The decision to specialize in surgery developed gradually during his studies, but the choice was a very natural one for him.
“I like to see the clear result of my work. Being a surgeon is a great job; it’s about as rewarding a job as you can get. I became interested in neurosurgery when, during my studies, I realized what a rapidly advancing field of medicine it is.”
The rapid development is challenging for professionals in the field. They must keep up to date. Continuous study is part of the job.
“It is essential to read a lot and go to conferences, but the work itself also teaches a great deal. Seeing and treating a lot of patients is the best way to learn,” Antinheimo says.
“It may sound naïve, but satisfied patients are the best part of my job. For example, at the outpatient clinic after the post-surgery follow-up check, a patient who had difficult symptoms and restricted mobility jumps up and walks when his name is called. Seeing that feels pretty good.”
