M.D., Ph.D., Associate professor, abdominal surgeon, endocrinological surgeon
At Helsinki Hospital, Antti Hietaranta focuses on the treatment of patients who need thyroid surgery and on the treatment of gastrointestinal surgery patients.
The novel private hospital brings new dimensions to his work.
‘I like being able to really focus on an individual patient’s problem. A genuine patient–doctor relationship develops in a private hospital, where one doctor is practically responsible for the entire treatment process of a patient,’ Antti Hietaranta explains.
‘For the patient, the treatment schedule and specialized experience are very important. We can provide efficient treatment at a short notice, and all of the doctors are experts in their respective fields.’
As is the case with many surgeons, Antti Hietaranta is not the only doctor in the family. His father is also a doctor.
‘As a schoolboy, I already knew that I wanted to become a doctor. In the surgery course at the university, everything fell into place.’
‘When I was a young B.M. working in summer jobs, I already felt that a career in surgery would suit my personality. I’ve always liked the way surgeons approach and do things: they are logical, straightforward and swift,’ Antti Hietaranta says.
Job satisfaction comes from the effectiveness of the work.
‘Patients come for treatment, they are operated on and they get well. The work is very effective; the effects are rapid and can usually be seen immediately in the patient,’ Antti Hietaranta explains.
‘And I really enjoy operating on patients; I like to work with my hands.’
