M.D., Plastic surgeon
Maija Kolehmainen is a plastic surgeon who specializes in breast surgery and the surgery of the pelvic and genital areas. Plastic surgery is still often first associated with aesthetic surgery, even though most plastic surgeons perform reconstructive surgery.
‘For me, personally, the treatment of illnesses is more interesting and rewarding than aesthetic surgery, which is also interesting but a completely different profession in my opinion. I prefer treating illnesses.’
Maija Kolehmainen says that working at Helsinki Hospital is very motivating, mainly because it is a doctor-led hospital. For its part, the hospital also backs up public health care.
‘It is motivating to think that I can participate in the development of these services. Usually it’s not possible for us doctors to participate in the designing of hospitals – we must be able to work in any conditions.’
‘Today, university hospital-level care is not available to all Finns, due to regional and other reasons. We offer an option.’
A private hospital specializing in demanding surgical operations can be considered innovative in more ways than one.
‘In many fields of industry, the production is being transferred to lower-cost countries. In Finland, we should expand our thinking into new fields when we are considering possible export products. Those products could include high-end medical expertise, as well as expertise in many other fields,’ Maija Kolehmainen says.
