Esa-Pekka Pälvimäki

M.D., Ph.D., Neurosurgeon

Esa-Pekka Pälvimäki established the medical operations of Helsinki Hospital on the basis of first-rate quality of care and patient safety. He works as a senior consultant neurosurgeon and specializes in minimally invasive spinal surgery and neuromodulation, such as spinal cord stimulation and deep brain stimulation.

"It is important to me that the needs of the patient are the starting point for planning care. Evidence-based care combined with individualized, careful treatment planning ensures the best possible outcome," Pälvimäki says.

Hospital environments have been familiar to Pälvimäki since childhood, thanks to his mother being a nurse. When he became interested in science and research at an early age, a career as a physician was the natural path. He did his Ph.D. on a topic in neuroscience.

"Passion for my work comes from seeing the results: satisfied patients who get the help they need. That is inspiring. It gives you the enthusiasm to deepen your medical training still further and to improve yourself in every aspect of neurosurgery."

As the founder, Pälvimäki has had a central role in the establishment of Helsinki Hospital. The hospital’s service chain represents his view of the optimal way of providing health services.

"I have always felt an inborn need to do things independently, in line with my personal convictions and without compromises. It was ideal to establish a hospital owned by my fellow surgeons, a world-class team of which I am immensely proud."
