Sinikka Suominen

Plastic Surgeon, Breast Reconstructive Surgeon; surgical treatment of lymphedema and facial paralysis, oculoplastic surgery

At Helsinki Hospital, Plastic Surgeon Sinikka Suominen performs mainly reconstructive plastic surgery and microsurgery of the breast, facial and pelvic areas. Her areas of expertise include the surgical treatment of swelling caused by congenital lymphedemas or lymphedemas arising after various types of cancer surgery.

"I am actively involved in various international networks seeking new solutions. For example, many new procedures have been identified for the surgical treatment of lymphedemas," Suominen says.

Suominen's other areas of expertise include the treatment of facial nerve paralysis and oculoplastic surgery, i.e. reconstructive plastic surgery of the area around the eye.

"I perform so-called smile surgery in cases of facial nerve paralysis, in which muscle tissue is transplanted from the thigh to the cheek, enabling the patient to smile once again. These aspects of my work are extremely rewarding; it feels great when, for example, a child can smile due to surgery," she says.

Suominen views the variety and challenging nature of plastic surgery as its best aspects. There is never a single solution to a patient's problem – you have to choose the option that best fits the overall situation.

"I have always had the attitude that I want to find out about new, less-familiar issues and solutions. I never like to say that nothing can be done. Sometimes, even small measures and steps forward can be very important to the patient," Suominen says.

"The patients and the solutions suitable for them are always different. That is the essence of my job. You never become bored or tired of this work."
